More about this artwork

The painting titled "Angel" by Abbott Handerson Thayer presents a touching and serene depiction of an angelic figure, combining an ethereal atmosphere with a sense of intimate realism. This artwork features a young figure with large, feathered wings that span expansively, framing her form against a muted, neutral background which highlights the figure itself. The angel is dressed in a simple, flowing white gown, suggesting purity and the celestial nature traditionally associated with angels. Her face is rendered with delicate features, and her expression is contemplative and tranquil, capturing the viewer’s attention with a gaze that seems both penetrating and distant. This effect adds to the mystical aura of the piece, inviting reflections on spirituality or the divine.Thayer’s use of light enhances the texture of the wings and dress, giving the figure a sculptural quality, while the subtle interplay of shadows and highlights adds depth and realism. The overall composition is balanced yet dynamic, with the wings' presence adding a visual impact that is both uplifting and protective. This painting is a beautiful example of Thayer’s skill in combining realistic portraiture with symbolic and emotional themes, making it a poignant representation of angelic grace and human introspection.

Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) was an American artist, naturalist and teacher. He grew up in a wealthy Boston family and was a leader of the NY art world, selling portraits and allegorical figures to European Renaissance collectors. His art changed drastically when his wife died, when he moved to a colony of artists settled in Dublin, New Hampshire. He painted landscapes, delicate flowers, and idealistic paintings of women as angels and madonnas.
