More about this artwork

This painting by Abbott Handerson Thayer, titled *Roseate Spoonbills, Study for Book Concealing Coloration in the Animal Kingdom*, depicts two roseate spoonbills positioned amidst a marshy backdrop. Thayer, known for his theories on animal camouflage, showcases these vibrant birds, potentially illustrating his interest in how their pink hues might blend with the surrounding environment or stand out against the muted greens and greys. The scene captures a dynamic moment, likely in the early morning or at dusk, given the soft, diffuse light and understated sky. One spoonbill is captured in the midst of an animated gesture, possibly beginning to take flight, with its wings dramatically outstretched, emphasizing a sense of movement and energy. The other appears more subdued and is likely foraging or standing alert. Their distinctive spoon-shaped bills, which are ideal for catching aquatic prey, are prominently displayed.Thayer’s brushwork is notably expressive, mirroring the spontaneous movement of the birds. The color palette is a mix of subtle greys and purples in the background, contrasted against the soft pink and white tones of the birds' feathers, vividly capturing the natural elegance and quiet drama of a wetland scene. Thayer’s interest in how color and form play into evolutionary survival strategies in animals is evident in the nuanced way he portrays the birds within their habitat.

Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) was an American artist, naturalist and teacher. He grew up in a wealthy Boston family and was a leader of the NY art world, selling portraits and allegorical figures to European Renaissance collectors. His art changed drastically when his wife died, when he moved to a colony of artists settled in Dublin, New Hampshire. He painted landscapes, delicate flowers, and idealistic paintings of women as angels and madonnas.
