More about this artwork

This painting, titled "Nantucket Sand Dune" by Abbott Handerson Thayer, captures a serene and textured landscape of sand dunes on Nantucket Island. The scene in the painting is divided into various intriguing layers that collectively convey the unique coastal ecosystem. In the foreground, you can see tall green grasses, painted with brisk, upward strokes, suggesting their wild and organic growth. The grasses are vivid in color, standing out against the more muted sandy tones of the beach. This area also features subtle, gentle undulations in the sand, indicating the natural shifts of the landscape.Moving towards the middle of the painting, a large, prominent dune rises, its contours highlighted by contrasting shades of light and shadow. The dune’s peak is sharp and bright against the overcast sky, while darker patches of vegetation, possible shrubs or patches of different sand texture, accentuate its form. This helps create a sense of depth and dimension. The background of the painting extends into further dune landscapes, which progressively become more subtle and blend into the horizon. These layers are delicately shaded, suggesting distance and a vast openness to the landscape.

Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) was an American artist, naturalist and teacher. He grew up in a wealthy Boston family and was a leader of the NY art world, selling portraits and allegorical figures to European Renaissance collectors. His art changed drastically when his wife died, when he moved to a colony of artists settled in Dublin, New Hampshire. He painted landscapes, delicate flowers, and idealistic paintings of women as angels and madonnas.
