More about this artwork

"Winged Figure" by Abbott Handerson Thayer is a compelling and beautiful painting that captures a serene and contemplative figure, seemingly an angel, enveloped in a heavenly atmosphere. The figure is depicted with a gentle, downward gaze, her eyes closed in a peaceful expression as if she is lost in thought or prayer. Her large, softly feathered wings curve gracefully around her, suggesting both protection and majesty. The color palette comprises soft blues and clouds of whites that blend harmoniously in the background, creating a feeling of openness and tranquility. The subject's dress is a warm, earthy yellow, which subtly contrasts against the cooler tones of the sky, highlighting her form within the composition.Thayer's brushwork gives a delicate and ethereal texture to the angel's wings and the clouds around her, enhancing the overall dreamlike quality of the work. This artwork not only showcases Thayer's skill with figure and color but also his ability to evoke emotion and spirituality through his representation of celestial themes. The serene yet poignant aura of the angel invites viewers into a moment of introspection and calm, making it a captivating piece both visually and emotionally.

Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) was an American artist, naturalist and teacher. He grew up in a wealthy Boston family and was a leader of the NY art world, selling portraits and allegorical figures to European Renaissance collectors. His art changed drastically when his wife died, when he moved to a colony of artists settled in Dublin, New Hampshire. He painted landscapes, delicate flowers, and idealistic paintings of women as angels and madonnas.
