More about this artwork

"Cornish Headlands," painted by Abbott Handerson Thayer in 1898, captures a beautifully rugged coastal scene. The painting features a dramatic view of the Cornish coastline with its steep, rocky cliffs that slope sharply into the cerulean sea. The perspective offered in the painting places the viewer at a high vantage point, looking over a ridge covered with lush green grass, contrasting starkly with the dark, almost monolithic appearance of the cliffs. The texture of Thayer’s brushwork varies from soft and airy in the depiction of the sky and distant horizon to more defined and bold strokes on the rocky formations. The sea below mirrors the sky with a tranquil expanse of blue, interrupted only by the gentle foam of waves breaking against the rugged shoreline. The color palette is predominantly cool, relying on shades of blue and grey to convey a sense of vastness and serenity, yet Thayer skillfully uses splashes of yellow and green to highlight the sunlit grass and spots on the rocky face, suggesting sunlight playing over the landscape. This play of light not only brings a vibrant life to the scene but also creates a dynamic contrast between the earth and water elements.Overall, the painting exudes a profound sense of peace and natural beauty, characteristic of Thayer's work, where he often sought to capture the sublime and tranquil aspects of nature.

Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) was an American artist, naturalist and teacher. He grew up in a wealthy Boston family and was a leader of the NY art world, selling portraits and allegorical figures to European Renaissance collectors. His art changed drastically when his wife died, when he moved to a colony of artists settled in Dublin, New Hampshire. He painted landscapes, delicate flowers, and idealistic paintings of women as angels and madonnas.
