More about this artwork

"Girl Arranging Her Hair" by Abbott Handerson Thayer is a striking depiction of a young woman engrossed in the intimate act of fixing her hair. The painting portrays her in a side profile, her face gently turned to the viewer as she lifts her arms to arrange her long tresses. The color palette Thayer uses is rich yet subtle, emphasizing soft earth tones and lush greens that meld seamlessly with the diffuse, shadowy backdrop. The woman's expression is serene and focused, suggesting a moment of private contemplation. The soft, loose brushstrokes give the painting a fluid and natural feel, particularly noticeable in the rendering of her white gown which catches the light, creating a luminous contrast with the darker background. This contrast not only emphasizes the figure but also adds a depth to the painting, drawing the viewer into this quiet moment of everyday grace. The background is indistinct, composed of dark, leafy greens that create a sense of being enveloped in a natural space, possibly outdoors. This connection with nature might be seen as highlighting the purity and simplicity of the scene.Overall, the painting is a beautiful example of Thayer's skill in capturing the beauty and solemnity of human moments, his subtle interplay of light and shadow, and his ability to convey deep emotion through seemingly ordinary scenes. Thayer's careful balance of detail and abstraction invites the viewer to appreciate the timeless beauty and tranquility of a simple, everyday act.

Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) was an American artist, naturalist and teacher. He grew up in a wealthy Boston family and was a leader of the NY art world, selling portraits and allegorical figures to European Renaissance collectors. His art changed drastically when his wife died, when he moved to a colony of artists settled in Dublin, New Hampshire. He painted landscapes, delicate flowers, and idealistic paintings of women as angels and madonnas.
