More about this artwork

This painting by Abbott Handerson Thayer is a dreamy and ethereal representation of white flamingos. The artwork illustrates two flamingos, both shown with their heads dipped downward in a serene, almost introspective posture. Thayer employs soft, muted tones primarily in shades of white and pale pink, creating a ghostly effect that blurs the outline of the birds against the ambiguous, shadowy background. The flamingos are depicted with a certain simplicity, yet there is great attention to detail in the texture of their feathers and the shading around their eyes and beaks. These details draw the viewer's attention to the delicate beauty and fragility of the creatures, enhancing their mystical and poetic quality. The title, "White Flamingoes, Study For Book Concealing Coloration In The Animal Kingdom," suggests that this work might have served as a study for a larger project focussing on the theme of camouflage in nature. Thayer was known for his interest in natural history and particularly the concept of protective coloration in animals, which is clearly reflected in this soft and subdued portrayal where the flamingos blend seamlessly into their environment. This piece not only showcases Thayer's skill as an artist but also his profound interest in the natural world and his desire to explore and communicate the intricate relationships between animals and their habitats.

Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) was an American artist, naturalist and teacher. He grew up in a wealthy Boston family and was a leader of the NY art world, selling portraits and allegorical figures to European Renaissance collectors. His art changed drastically when his wife died, when he moved to a colony of artists settled in Dublin, New Hampshire. He painted landscapes, delicate flowers, and idealistic paintings of women as angels and madonnas.
