More about this artwork
This painting by Abbott Handerson Thayer, titled "Roseate Spoonbill, Study For Book Concealing Coloration In The Animal Kingdom," illustrates the concept of camouflage in nature, a theme central to Thayer’s work. The painting displays a roseate spoonbill mid-flight, its soft pink hues gently blending with the pale sky in the background. The focus on the bird's natural coloring, which merges seamlessly with its environment, reflects Thayer's interest in how coloration and patterns in animals serve as a form of concealment from predators. The foreground of the painting features dark, green reeds that stand tall and dense, drawing the viewer's eye towards the center where the spoonbill is depicted. The bird’s elongated, spoon-like bill, a distinctive feature, is subtly outlined against the sky. The contrast between the dark greens of the reeds and the muted pastel background emphasizes the bird's adaptation to its surroundings.Thayer's brushwork gives a sense of texture and movement, with strokes that convey the softness of the feathers and the dynamic motion of flight. The overall effect is somewhat ethereal and tranquil, inviting contemplation on the harmony between the organism and its habitat. This study not merely captures the beauty of the roseate spoonbill but also serves as an exploration of Thayer's theories on the evolutionary advantages of animal coloration, a subject he deeply investigated in his scholarly works.

Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) was an American artist, naturalist and teacher. He grew up in a wealthy Boston family and was a leader of the NY art world, selling portraits and allegorical figures to European Renaissance collectors. His art changed drastically when his wife died, when he moved to a colony of artists settled in Dublin, New Hampshire. He painted landscapes, delicate flowers, and idealistic paintings of women as angels and madonnas.
