More about this artwork

This painting by Lucas Cranach, titled "Portrait of a Woman," displays the graceful portrayal of a woman dressed in attire of the early 16th century. The subject is depicted against a vivid green background which vividly contrasts with the dark tones of her clothing, enhancing her presence in the frame. Her garment is composed of a black bodice; the high, closed neckline suggests a modest social custom of the era. The carefully detailed golden-embroidered belt at her waist adds a touch of elegance and luxury to her otherwise somber attire. Her face is rendered with a pale complexion and features precise, understated make-up, consistent with the styles believed to be fashionable among higher social echelons of her time. She wears a large black hat that envelops her head and shoulders dramatically. The hat, along with her fair hair, framing her face in subtle waves, complements the contour of her face, directing attention to her thoughtful and introspective expression. Her gaze, direct yet distant, invokes a sense of her personality, possibly reflecting the conventions of demeanor and expression during that period.Cranach’s style here is marked by his attention to detail, particularly in the textures of the fabrics and the intricate accessories, a characteristic feature of his portraits. This painting not only serves as a depiction of an individual but also embeds insights into the fashion and societal norms of the time, portrayed through Cranach's distinctive and refined artistic lens.
