More about this artwork

"La jolie Cueillette," an enchanting creation by Gerda Wegener painted around 1919-1920, captivates viewers with its whimsical charm and intricate detail. This painting features two elegantly dressed figures in a lush garden, embedded in a scene that breathes life into the idyllic beauty of nature and refined grace of Art Nouveau aesthetics. The central figure, a woman, is adorned in a lavish gown with flowing fabrics of pink and graced with floral patterns, which seem to merge seamlessly with the abundance of flowers around her. Her attire is accentuated by a white flowing veil that adds an ethereal quality to her persona. She bends delicately to gather flowers, their forms echoed in the embroidery of her dress, suggesting a deep harmony between humanity and nature.Accompanying her is a figure in a fantastically vibrant costume, echoing the colors and ornate style typical of the period. The soft hues, detailed patterns on the clothing, and playful interaction of these figures with their environment evoke a serene narrative that seems suspended in time.Above them, two birds in flight add a sense of freedom and movement to the composition, enhancing the feeling of a fleeting, perfect moment captured in time.

Gerda Marie Fredrikke Wegener (15 March 1886 – 28 July 1940) was a Danish illustrator and painter. Wegener is known for her fashion illustrations and later her paintings that pushed the boundaries of her time concerning gender and love. These works were classified as lesbian erotica at times and many were inspired by her partner, the transgender woman Lili Elbe. Wegener employed these works in the styles of Art Nouveau and later Art Deco.
