More about this artwork

Gerda Wegener, a Danish artist known for her distinctive, Art Deco style, created a compelling visualization of femininity and narrative allure in her painting titled "Sur talons rouges pl 07" from 1929. This evocative artwork captures a scene brimming with playful intimacy and baroque flair. In the painting, we observe two figures adorned in lavish costumes typical of the decadent early 20th century Parisian elite. The central character, a woman, is dressed in an opulent gown detailed with floral ornamental patterns and a voluminous skirt, highlighting an evident luxury in her attire. Her face expresses a coy surprise as she is embraced from behind by a masked figure whose outfit suggests aristocratic origins, possibly hinting at a narrative of a masquerade or a clandestine encounter. The color palette is rich and subdued, with soft creams, deep blacks, and touches of vibrant turquoise around the woman’s hair ribbon, adding a splash of color that draws attention to her expression. The background is subtly detailed, featuring an elegant interior with a framed painting that mirrors the ongoing interaction, further enhancing the layers of the overall composition."Sur talons rouges pl 07" is not just a visual treat; it's an invitation to ponder the stories and the characters portrayed. Gerda Wegener uses her art to explore themes of identity, performance, and the fluidity of human connections, making this painting an intriguing piece that resonates with audiences even today.

Gerda Marie Fredrikke Wegener (15 March 1886 – 28 July 1940) was a Danish illustrator and painter. Wegener is known for her fashion illustrations and later her paintings that pushed the boundaries of her time concerning gender and love. These works were classified as lesbian erotica at times and many were inspired by her partner, the transgender woman Lili Elbe. Wegener employed these works in the styles of Art Nouveau and later Art Deco.
