More about this artwork

17" by Georges ValmierDiscover the captivating world of Georges Valmier, a pioneer of the Cubist movement, through his striking painting "Collection décors et couleurs Pl.17" (1930). This artwork is a dazzling example of Valmier’s unique approach to geometric abstraction, where he masterfully blends shape, color, and pattern to challenge our perceptions of traditional visual elements. The painting features a complex arrangement of geometric forms and lines, segmented into different panels, each brimming with its own color scheme and synthetic elements. The leftmost panel introduces a playful interaction of curves and angular shapes, accented with a polka-dotted texture and a myriad of tones including mauve, cream, and burgundy, which create a dynamic and almost tactile feel.Adjacent to this, the middle panel showcases a more subdued palette, where oval and linear motifs dominate, highlighted by sharp contrasts between blues, reds, and earthy browns. This contrasting play is a testament to Valmier's skill in using geometric abstraction to evoke depth and motion, drawing the viewer’s eye across the canvas in a rhythmic dance. The lower strip serves as a serene conclusion with its cooler colors and streamlined design, providing a visual rest from the complexity above, yet still echoing the thematic use of line and shape seen throughout the work."Collection decors et couleurs Pl.17" not only exemplifies Georges Valmier's contribution to Cubism and modern art but also reflects the broader cultural movements of the 1930s, where art became a field of experimentation and a reflection of modern industrial progress and artistic innovation.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
