More about this artwork

Dive into the early 20th-century avant-garde with Georges Valmier’s captivating painting ‘Nature morte sur une table’, created in the period of 1911-1912. This stunning piece showcases Valmier’s transition into Cubism, a style that revolutionized modern art through its abstraction and fragmentation of reality. In this painting, Valmier deconstructs the traditional still life, placing it in a geometric ensemble that teases the viewer’s perception. The focal point of the artwork is a brilliantly fragmented vase, depicted with bold oranges and greens that break through the surrounding muted tones. This vase, though abstracted, suggests a burst of flowers placed on a similarly styled cubic chair. The background and the platform subtly blend with structured lines and color shifts, inviting the eyes to explore every angle and surface difference.Valmier's use of color and form does more than represent the physical; it evokes a sense of depth and multiple perspectives within the same frame, hallmark traits of Cubist artwork. Positioned on the lower right, Valmier signs his piece, stamping his identity on this complex fusion of shapes and shades.‘Nature morte sur une table’ is more than just a visual experience. It is an invitation to perceive the everyday world transformed by the Cubist lens—a contemplative exploration of form, shadow, and hue, encouraging us to appreciate the interconnectedness of object and space.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
