More about this artwork

On display is Georges Valmier's captivating 1924 painting "Le Village," a prime example of the geometric abstraction that marked the artist's bold transition from figurative work. This piece showcases Valmier’s innovative approach to cubism, infusing it with his unique, vibrant style. The painting depicts an abstract village scene, broken down into angular, interlocking shapes and planes. The colors are simultaneously muted and vivid, featuring shades of gray, blue, pink, and green, cleverly juxtaposed to create a harmonious whole. The roofs of the houses, some in classic red and others in gray, tilt at intriguing angles, while a central arched structure in a striking aqua shade draws the eye inward, acting as a focal point.Valmier’s composition feels both orderly and dynamic, suggesting the rhythm and layout of village life without resorting to literal representation. The presence of figures can be subtly discerned; their forms reduced to simple, eloquent shapes that blend seamlessly into the village landscape, suggesting their integration into the fabric of daily life."Le Village" invites viewers to explore the boundaries between abstraction and representation, challenging them to find meaning in shapes and colors.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
