More about this artwork

Georges Valmier's "Collection décors et couleurs Pl.04," created in 1930, is a captivating example of the Cubist movement that influenced early 20th-century modern art. In this painting, Valmier employs geometric abstraction to deconstruct and reconstruct forms, an approach typical of Cubism. The arrangement is characterized by an intriguing assortment of shapes and figures, skillfully integrated to play with our perception of dimension and space.Vivid swathes of dark and light blues, beiges, and blacks, along with contrasting patterns of stripes and waves, energize the composition. Circular and semi-circular forms interrupt the linear dynamics of the painting, creating a rhythmic visual harmony. The bits of creamy yellow and pastel tones bring warmth to the otherwise cool palette, highlighting Valmier's meticulous attention to the emotional impact of colors.Valmier's work is not just a random arrangement of shapes; rather, it invites viewers to explore the relationships between different elements. Each shape and color seems carefully chosen to evoke balance and tension, prompting an exploration into the realm of abstract beauty and theoretical design.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
