More about this artwork

Explore the dynamic interplay of shapes and textures in Georges Valmier's 1918 masterpiece, "Composition au papier journal." This painting is a vibrant example of early Cubist experimentation, where Valmier pushes the boundaries between abstraction and representation. In this composition, Valmier skillfully integrates fragments of newsprint, creating a dialogue between printed words and the tumultuous, fragmented forms surrounding them. The use of actual newspaper clippings in the artwork not only adds texture but also grounds the abstract geometric shapes in the reality of everyday life, suggesting a narrative or message that resonates beyond the visual. The color palette is predominantly earthy—shades of browns, creams, and blacks, punctuated with accents of red and white. This choice of colors enhances the feeling of depth and complexity, inviting viewers to dive into each layer and explore the multitude of forms hidden within.Valmier's composition is a cacophony of angular and curved shapes that seem to burst forth from the canvas, creating a dynamic sense of movement. This effect is further amplified by the sharp contrasts between the dark and light areas, guiding the eyes across the painting in a continuous flow."Composition au papier journal" is not just a visual experience but an intellectual puzzle, prompting questions about the relationships between text and image, the abstract and the concrete, and the artistic space versus the everyday.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
