More about this artwork

Welcome to our exploration of "Composition, Motif Decoratif," a remarkable painting by Georges Valmier, created around 1925-1930. This artwork is an exemplar of the abstract style that Valmier was known for, a style that he developed by breaking away from more traditional forms of representation. In this painting, Valmier skillfully employs geometric abstraction, a hallmark of his artistic vocabulary. The composition is layered with various geometric shapes that interlock and overlap, creating a dynamic visual puzzle. Dominant shapes include a large, dark brown curved form that seems to serve as the backdrop and a central blue circle that draws the eye. Surrounding these are vertically oriented bars of muted yellow and other juxtaposed shapes in shades of taupe, black, red, and blue. The use of color in "Composition, Motif Decoratif" is particularly striking. Though the palette is quite restrained, featuring mainly primary colors with shades of brown and gray, Valmier achieves a richness through the depth and contrast of colors. Each hue interacts with its neighbors to enhance the overall vibrancy of the piece.Valmier’s technique also involves a sophisticated use of borders and lines. Notice the thin lines that outline various shapes, adding definition and further complicating the spatial relationships within the painting. These elements do not merely define; they resonate with a rhythm that is almost musical, inviting viewers to explore the composition from multiple angles and perspectives."Composition, Motif Decoratif" is a testament to Georges Valmier's mastery in transforming simple geometric forms into a complex, enthralling visual experience, making him a significant figure in the development of Cubism and abstract art.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
