More about this artwork

The painting titled "Collection décors et couleurs Pl.01" from 1930 by the acclaimed Cubist artist Georges Valmier showcases an intriguing exploration into abstract forms and the dynamism of colors. Valmier, known for his distinctive approach towards geometric abstraction, presents a composition that is both symmetrical and engaging, making use of bold blues, rich oranges, and intense blacks. In this artwork, two panels mirror each other with slight variations in positioning and thickness of elements, creating a subtle rhythmic discordance that captivates the viewer. The shapes oscillate between resembling architectural structures and organic forms, hinting at the fluidity and interconnectedness of the artificial and the natural. Each section is divided and filled with stripes, swirls, and dots, engaging the eye with patterns that seem both methodical and spontaneous.Valmier's use of color in "Collection décors et couleurs Pl.01" is not just aesthetic but also structural, as the dark and light shades carve out spatial depth and suggest movement within a compressed, two-dimensional plane. The painting radiates a sense of modernity and innovation, integral to the Cubist movement's fascination with redefining the boundaries of traditional art forms. This piece would attract viewers who appreciate art that challenges the conventional representations and seeks to translate complex ideas through the simplicity of geometric abstraction.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
