More about this artwork

"Les Bœufs Dans La Montagne" (The Oxen in the Mountains) is an intriguing Cubist painting by French artist Georges Valmier, crafted in 1922. Dominated by a palette of earthy tones intermingled with shades of blue and green, this artwork strikingly departs from traditional representations of landscapes and livestock.Valmier breaks down the forms of the oxen and the mountainous landscape into a series of overlapping and interlocking shapes, creating a dynamic and somewhat abstract composition. The viewer may initially struggle to identify the subjects within this complex arrangement of geometric forms. However, upon closer inspection, elements such as the outline of the oxen and parts of the mountain landscape begin to emerge from the abstract shapes.Valmier’s use of color, line, and form illustrates his mastery of Cubism, emphasizing the flatness of the canvas while also conveying depth and volume. The subtle variations in color not only delineate forms but also create a lively rhythm across the canvas, suggesting the movement of the oxen through the rugged terrain. This painting is a superb example of how modernism has reinterpreted classical themes in art.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
