More about this artwork

06" by Georges ValmierOn our exhibit this month, we feature an engaging piece from 1930 by Georges Valmier, titled "Collection décors et couleurs Pl.06." Known for his contributions to the Cubist movement, Valmier's work is a captivating exploration of form and color that continues to resonate with viewers nearly a century later. In this painting, Valmier employs a rich palette of pale pink, black, yellow, and gray to craft a composition that is both rhythmic and harmonious. The use of geometric shapes and interlocking patterns reveals his architectural approach to abstraction. Each segment of the canvas works cohesively with the others to create a vibrant, dynamic tableau that almost appears to be in motion.Central to the composition is a series of circles and curves that soften the boldness of the angular elements, introducing a sense of fluidity and continuity. This interaction between the linear and curvilinear forms suggests a musical rhythm, possibly reflecting the influence of contemporary jazz music, which like Cubism, was known for its syncopated rhythms and improvisational style."Collection décors et couleurs Pl.06" offers a glimpse into the modernist aesthetics of the early 20th century, showcasing Valmier's unique ability to blend color, pattern, and form. This painting not only highlights his technical prowess but also illustrates his innovative approach to capturing the essence of an era that was characterized by rapid changes and new ideas in art, culture, and society.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
