More about this artwork

"Geometrical Still Life II" is a captivating 1920 painting by the talented French artist Georges Valmier, an early adopter of Cubism—an artistic movement initiated by Picasso and Braque, which broke away from traditional perspectives of artwork. Valmier’s composition invites the viewer into a fragmented, abstract universe where both form and color interact dynamically. In this painting, various geometric shapes and textures meld in a symphony of abstraction, each piece contributing to a cohesive whole while maintaining its individuality. The array of patterns, from polka dots to fine grids, and a spectrum of colors, from muted earth tones to vibrant blues, suggests a depth and complexity beneath the surface simplicity of geometric abstraction.Valmier plays with the juxtaposition of these elements to challenge and engage the eye, creating a visual puzzle that dances between two-dimensional flatness and the illusion of three-dimensional space. This work not only reflects the artist's mastery over color and form but also encapsulates the essence of Cubism, where the subject matter is deconstructed and reassembled into an intriguing, non-traditional form.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
