More about this artwork

14" by Georges ValmierDiscover Georges Valmier's intriguing artwork, "Collection décors et couleurs Pl.14," a captivating example of abstract art from the year 1930. This painting eloquently showcases Valmier’s geometrical approach to cubism, where he harmoniously blends shapes and colors to create visually stimulating compositions. The artwork is divided into two distinct sections, each filled with a collection of forms and patterns that guides the viewer's eye across the canvas. In the top segment, you’re greeted with a rich tapestry of textures and linear dynamics. A bold mix of stripes and circles in various shades and sizes can be seen cascading across the canvas, flanked by geometric patterns and occasional solid blocks of color that add depth and intrigue. The lower segment, though separated by a clear horizontal divide, continues the theme of geometric exploration but with a slightly muted color palette and more emphasis on curved versus straight lines. Here, organic shapes interplay with rigid angles and sharp lines, creating a contrast that is both challenging and pleasing to the eye.Valmier’s use of colors is also noteworthy. He adeptly employs a range of hues, from vibrant reds and blues to more subdued greys and browns, ensuring that each form not only stands out on its own but also complements its neighbors. This use of color not only enhances the visual impact of the painting but also imbues it with a rhythm and flow that keeps the viewer engaged."Collection décors et couleurs Pl.14" is a testament to Valmier's innovative spirit and his adeptness at transforming traditional art forms into modern expressions rich with metaphor and meaning.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
