More about this artwork

Georges Valmier's 1929 painting "Nature Morte Aux Fruits" offers a stunning exploration of Cubism, an art movement known for its abstracted forms and fragmented representation of reality. In this piece, Valmier presents a still life composition that appears to defy the conventional observation of objects, breaking them down into shapes and colors that both overlap and intersect in intriguing ways. The title of the painting, which translates to "Still Life with Fruits," invites viewers to discern the shapes of apples amidst the abstract geometric patterns that dominate the canvas. The central area of the artwork features what can be perceived as stylized apples, rendered in shades of black and white against a contrastingly vibrant block of colors including greens, pinks, and earthy browns. These fruit forms mingle with dynamic, swirling contours and sharp lines that guide the eye across the complex arrangement, suggesting depth and movement. This painting exemplifies Valmier's adept manipulation of form and color to evoke a sense of rhythm and balance, all while pushing the boundaries of how everyday objects are traditionally portrayed in art. "Nature Morte Aux Fruits" not only highlights the artist's commitment to Cubism but also reflects his unique ability to transform familiar subjects into captivating abstract compositions.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
