More about this artwork
This evocative painting by Christen Købke, entitled "View From The Loft Of The Grain Store At The Bakery In The Citadel Of Copenhagen," captures a serene and somewhat contemplative moment. The scene is framed from the viewpoint of an interior looking outward, a technique that adds depth and a sense of being part of the environment. In the foreground, a woman stands on a wooden deck, holding what appears to be a musical horn. Her attire is rustic and modest, consisting of a salmon-colored dress with a white apron, and she wears a bonnet, suggesting a setting in the 19th century. Her gaze is directed downwards in a thoughtful pose, which along with the soft, natural lighting, contributes to the tranquil and introspective mood of the composition.Outside, beyond the structure's wooden beams and open door, lush greenery and trees are visible, indicating a rural or semi-rural setting. The background features two figures in the distance—a man and a boy near a fence, which introduces a narrative element to the piece, suggesting everyday life and activity continuing beyond the immediate focus on the woman.Købke's use of light and shadow, along with his detailed rendering of textures from the wood grains to the fabrics, brings a tactile quality to the image. The viewer is invited not only to appreciate the quiet beauty of the moment but to feel the peacefulness encapsulated within this slice of Danish life.

Portraits, landscapes and the beauty of Scandinavian nature by Christen Købke (1810-1848). “The Danish master of light” was one of the best-known artists of the Danish Golden Age. Born in Copenhagen, Købke trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under the portrait painter C.A Lorentzen. It was here that he was introduced to plein-air painting, which became the hallmark of his later work.
