More about this artwork
This is a portrait painting by Christen Købke titled "Portrait of the Artist's Mother, Cecilia Margrethe Købke, née Petersen". In this painting, the artist's mother, Mrs. Købke, is depicted in a deeply personal and intimate portrayal. Her expression is contemplative and thoughtful, with a direct gaze that seems to engage the viewer. She rests her chin on her hand, which adds a relaxed, yet reflective quality to her pose. She is dressed in traditional attire, featuring a wide, lace-trimmed bonnet that frames her face, enhancing her dignified and serene expression. Her dress is richly textured, suggesting a comfortable, middle-class status. The colors used in the painting—earthy greens and browns for her dress, contrasted with the white and grey of her bonnet—contribute to the overall warmth and depth of the portrait. The background is subdued and dark, which focuses attention on her face and the textures of her clothing. The small detail of a white sewing thread on the right side hints at domestic life and perhaps her hobbies or daily activities. Overall, Købke’s painting not only captures the likeness of his mother but also conveys a sense of her character and the closeness between the artist and his subject.

Portraits, landscapes and the beauty of Scandinavian nature by Christen Købke (1810-1848). “The Danish master of light” was one of the best-known artists of the Danish Golden Age. Born in Copenhagen, Købke trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under the portrait painter C.A Lorentzen. It was here that he was introduced to plein-air painting, which became the hallmark of his later work.
