More about this artwork
This artwork by Christen Købke, titled "A Sitting Dog After An Antique At Charlottenborg," is an etching that depicts a sculptural representation of a dog. The dog is shown in a seated position, looking attentively over its shoulder, which adds a dynamic and somewhat alert expression to the figure. The technique used in the etching showcases detailed, fine lines which beautifully render the textures of the dog’s fur and muscles, emphasizing its physical form and the anatomical accuracy. The contrast in the etching is striking, with dark, dense lines against lighter areas that suggest a play of light and shadow on the dog's figure. The background is minimally detailed with horizontal lines, directing all focus onto the dog itself. This piece likely reflects an artistic interest in classical sculptures and a study of form and pose typical of neoclassical artworks. The representation of the dog not only captures physical details but also imbues the animal with a noble, almost regal air, which is characteristic of neoclassical interpretations of animals. By referring to it as "after an Antique at Charlottenborg," the title suggests that this piece was inspired by an earlier sculpture possibly housed at the Charlottenborg Palace, which is known for its collection of artistic works and its association with the Royal Danish Academy of Art.

Portraits, landscapes and the beauty of Scandinavian nature by Christen Købke (1810-1848). “The Danish master of light” was one of the best-known artists of the Danish Golden Age. Born in Copenhagen, Købke trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under the portrait painter C.A Lorentzen. It was here that he was introduced to plein-air painting, which became the hallmark of his later work.
