More about this artwork
This painting by Christen Købke presents a portrait of Christian Holm, identified as an animal painter. The artwork captures Holm's earnest and direct gaze, which conveys a sense of his thoughtful and perhaps introspective character. His expression, enhanced by Købke's detailed and sensitive brushwork, radiates a quiet intensity that is striking.Holm's attire is also notable; he wears a crisp white shirt with a high collar, accented by a neat black bow tie—an outfit that exudes a formal yet approachable air. The sleeves of the shirt are fashionably puffed at the shoulder, tapering to the wrist, where they are neatly gathered. His hands are relaxed and rest gently on the edge of what appears to be a table, providing a grounding focal point in the composition.Christen Købke’s mastery in subtle shading and texture is evident in this portrait, from the realistic rendering of Holm’s slightly disheveled hair to the soft creases of his shirt. The background is understated, a muted tone that ensures all attention remains on the subject. Through this effective use of color and lighting, Købke creates a sense of depth and realism that makes the portrait almost life-like.Overall, this painting is a fascinating depiction that not only showcases Holm's physical features but also offers a glimpse into his personality and perhaps his professional demeanor as an artist dedicated to the study and depiction of animals.

Portraits, landscapes and the beauty of Scandinavian nature by Christen Købke (1810-1848). “The Danish master of light” was one of the best-known artists of the Danish Golden Age. Born in Copenhagen, Købke trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under the portrait painter C.A Lorentzen. It was here that he was introduced to plein-air painting, which became the hallmark of his later work.
