More about this artwork

Welcome to our exhibit page featuring the mesmerizing artwork "Die Strasserau bei Linz" by Adalbert Stifter, dating back to around 1850. This painting captivates viewers with its serene depiction of a landscape at sunset, likely inspired by the picturesque surroundings of Linz, Austria. In the foreground, a tranquil waterway meanders, reflecting the pale golden hue of the setting sun. Sparse vegetation and reeds line the banks adding to the scene’s quiet charm. The masterful use of light and shade creates a reflective surface on the water that brings depth and movement to the painting. To the right, dense trees with autumn-tinted leaves frame the scene, loosely clustering around the water's edge, leading the viewer’s eye towards the brilliantly depicted sun. This celestial body, poised at the horizon, bathes the entire scene in a soft, warm glow, casting long and gentle shadows that enhance the mood of peaceful solitude. This artwork is a splendid example of Stifter’s attention to natural details and his ability to evoke emotion through the atmospheric play of light. It invites viewers to pause and reflect, enveloping them in the quiet beauty of a sunset that gently whispers of the day’s end in the Strasserau area near Linz.

Adalbert Stifter (1805–1868) was an Austrian writer, poet, painter and pedagogue. Born in Oberplan, Bohemia (now Horní Planá, Czech Republic), he was the eldest son of a wealthy linen weaver. Better known as a writer, Stifter was able to convey vivid and engaging landscapes in both his writing and painting. At the end of his life, exhausted by physical and mental illnesses, the artist died of suicide.
