More about this artwork

"Der Sarstein bei Alt-Aussee," a captivating painting by Adalbert Stifter, transports viewers to the serene and majestic landscapes of Austria. Painted in 1835, this artwork stands as a fine example of Stifter's delicate and precise style, demonstrating his deep appreciation for nature's sublime beauty. The painting depicts a tranquil scene near the town of Alt-Aussee, showing a breathtaking view of the Sarstein mountain. In the foreground, a rustic wooden cabin, presumably a shepherd's hut, is nestled among tall, slender pine trees. The gentle slope leads down to a serene lake, reflecting the clear sky above and flanked by lush greenery.A group of sheep grazes peacefully near the water, adding life and a sense of calm domesticity to the wild landscape. The path near the cabin suggests a connection to the wider world, yet it also feels like a secret, secluded spot, hidden away in the mountains. The background is dominated by the dramatic and rugged peaks of the Sarstein, rising starkly against a softly glowing sky. The clouds are tinted with the light of a setting or rising sun, suggesting either the beginning or end of a day. This light casts a warm glow over the entire scene, enhancing the sense of peaceful isolation and the timeless beauty of the alpine landscape."Der Sarstein bei Alt-Aussee" is more than just a landscape painting; it is a reflection of Stifter's romantic vision, where the majestic forces of nature and the quiet moments of rural life coexist in harmonious balance.

Adalbert Stifter (1805–1868) was an Austrian writer, poet, painter and pedagogue. Born in Oberplan, Bohemia (now Horní Planá, Czech Republic), he was the eldest son of a wealthy linen weaver. Better known as a writer, Stifter was able to convey vivid and engaging landscapes in both his writing and painting. At the end of his life, exhausted by physical and mental illnesses, the artist died of suicide.
