More about this artwork

"Im Gosautal (Oberösterreich)" by Adalbert Stifter, painted in 1834, beautifully captures a tranquil scene in the Gosau Valley of Upper Austria. In this vivid depiction, Stifter masterfully portrays a rustic wooden cabin, nestled among towering pine trees and rugged boulders. The foreground features a small group of villagers engaging in a pleasant conversation, suggesting a community deeply rooted in the tranquility of their natural surroundings. The background of the painting offers a stunning contrast, presenting the dramatic and craggy mountain peaks that loom in the distance, partially shrouded by soft cloud cover. This landscape, with its detailed portrayal of flora and geology, showcases Stifter's meticulous attention to the textures and details of the natural world. The scene is both inviting and serene, allowing the viewer to momentarily step into a world where nature's beauty and humanity's simplicity coexist harmoniously.

Adalbert Stifter (1805–1868) was an Austrian writer, poet, painter and pedagogue. Born in Oberplan, Bohemia (now Horní Planá, Czech Republic), he was the eldest son of a wealthy linen weaver. Better known as a writer, Stifter was able to convey vivid and engaging landscapes in both his writing and painting. At the end of his life, exhausted by physical and mental illnesses, the artist died of suicide.
