More about this artwork

"Die Teufelsmauer bei Hohenfurt (Kienberg)" by Adalbert Stifter is an evocative painting that draws viewers into a world of rugged natural beauty and dramatic wilderness. The landscape depicts the "Devil's Wall" at Hohenfurt near Kienberg, presenting an imposing rock formation that captures the fierce and untamed spirit of nature. In this artwork, Stifter uses a rich palette of greens, browns, and blues to portray a vivid scene where a powerful, white-capped river cuts through a secluded mountain valley. The rough textures of the rock walls contrast sharply with the fluid motion of the river, reflecting the eternal struggle between the solid permanence of stone and the persistent flow of water. The prominent rock formations, rendered with thick, assertive brushstrokes, dominate the foreground, guiding the viewer’s eye towards the river that slices through the valley. The play of light and shadow in the painting adds a dramatic effect, with the misty blue haze suggesting the cool dampness of this secluded location. The sky, peeking through the upper section of the canvas, offers a breath of softness in the overall rugged scene.Stifter, primarily celebrated as a writer, shows his deep sensibility for the natural world in this painting, capturing not just a landscape, but a feeling of awe and solitude that such wild places evoke. "Die Teufelsmauer bei Hohenfurt (Kienberg)" is not only a representation of a geographical feature, but also a reflection on the power and mystery of nature—a timeless scene that speaks of nature's beauty and brutality in equal measure.

Adalbert Stifter (1805–1868) was an Austrian writer, poet, painter and pedagogue. Born in Oberplan, Bohemia (now Horní Planá, Czech Republic), he was the eldest son of a wealthy linen weaver. Better known as a writer, Stifter was able to convey vivid and engaging landscapes in both his writing and painting. At the end of his life, exhausted by physical and mental illnesses, the artist died of suicide.
