More about this artwork

"Der Königssee mit dem Watzmann" is a majestic landscape painting by Adalbert Stifter, capturing the serene yet imposing presence of Königssee, a natural lake in Bavaria, Germany, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Watzmann mountain. Created in 1837, this artwork embodies the Romantic spirit of the era, emphasizing awe-inspiring nature and the sublime. The painting invites the viewer into a scene of tranquil waters reflecting the clear blue of the sky, bordered by steep, rugged mountain slopes draped in lush greenery. The composition leads the eye along the lake’s edge, drawing attention to a lone rower, dwarfed by the enormous scope of his surroundings. This figure adds a human element, contrasting with the immense scale of nature, and underscores themes of solitude and mankind’s smallness in the face of the natural world.Stifter's use of light and shadow, detailed textures, and rich natural colors helps convey not just the beauty, but also the overwhelming power and silence of this secluded landscape. The clear water in the foreground exposes smooth stones below the surface, adding to the realism and depth of the piece. One can almost hear the gentle lap of water against the shore and feel the cool, crisp mountain air.

Adalbert Stifter (1805–1868) was an Austrian writer, poet, painter and pedagogue. Born in Oberplan, Bohemia (now Horní Planá, Czech Republic), he was the eldest son of a wealthy linen weaver. Better known as a writer, Stifter was able to convey vivid and engaging landscapes in both his writing and painting. At the end of his life, exhausted by physical and mental illnesses, the artist died of suicide.
