More about this artwork

This captivating painting, *King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid - Cartoon Study* by Edward Burne-Jones, beautifully depicts the legendary tale of King Cophetua's love for a beggar maid, a story that resonates through various cultural myths about unexpected and transformative love.In the artwork, the central figure is the beggar maid, seated confidently yet modestly on a set of steps. Her gaze is direct and serene, engaging the viewer with a sense of quiet dignity. Her dress, simple in style yet rich in color, contrasts strikingly with the opulent surroundings, highlighting her status as an outsider in a regal setting. In front of her, King Cophetua kneels in a posture of adoration and humility. His armor gleams with meticulous detail, symbolizing his royal status and knightly valor. Despite his regal bearing, his captivated expression and downward gaze towards the beggar maid suggest his total surrender to love, transcending his kingly power and wealth. To the upper left, two figures (likely court attendants) engage in what appears to be a discussion or consultation over a document or planning, possibly plotting or weighing the implications of their king's unusual affection. Their presence adds a layer of narrative, suggesting the court's involvement or concern over this love affair. The setting is richly detailed, with architectural elements and textiles that convey the sophistication and luxury of the court.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
