More about this artwork

"Mondlandschaft mit bewölktem Himmel" (Moon Landscape with Cloudy Sky), painted by Adalbert Stifter around 1850, transports viewers to a mystical, almost otherworldly scene. This evocative landscape captures the essence of tranquility and the profound mystery of nature. The focal point of the artwork is a luminous, detailed moon, suspended in a shadowy, cloud-strewn sky that occupies the upper portion of the painting. Below lies a dim, textured terrain that might mirror the moon’s own enigmatic surface, suggesting a reflection or a continuation of the celestial globe into a terrestrial form.Stifter's use of muted, earthy tones, combined with the dark, rich patches of browns and blacks, interplays beautifully with the glimmering golden hues of the moon. This contrast not only emphasizes the moon's radiant glow but also accentuates the dense, impenetrable clouds that swirl around it.This painting invites contemplation on the quiet beauty of celestial phenomena and their mirror in our earthly environments.

Adalbert Stifter (1805–1868) was an Austrian writer, poet, painter and pedagogue. Born in Oberplan, Bohemia (now Horní Planá, Czech Republic), he was the eldest son of a wealthy linen weaver. Better known as a writer, Stifter was able to convey vivid and engaging landscapes in both his writing and painting. At the end of his life, exhausted by physical and mental illnesses, the artist died of suicide.
