More about this artwork

"Mondaufgang," painted by the multifaceted artist and writer Adalbert Stifter around 1855, captures a tranquil and enigmatic nighttime scene that invites contemplation and introspection. In this evocative painting, viewers are greeted by the serene beauty of a moonrise over a subdued landscape. The celestial body, glowing softly, emerges just above the horizon, bathing the scene in a gentle, subtle light. The composition is minimalistic yet powerful, featuring a vast expanse of a dark, undefined landscape that stretches across the upper portion of the canvas, suggesting the quiet expanse of night. Below, a reflective body of water mirrors the moon's pale light, enhancing the feeling of quiet stillness. A solitary cluster of trees on the right side of the painting offers a slight contrast to the otherwise open scene, their dark forms silhouetted against the moonlit sky and water.Stifter's use of muted colors and broad, textured strokes evokes a mood of solitude and peace. The vastness of the scene and the simplicity of the elements—sky, water, a hint of land, and sparse vegetation—serve to focus the viewer's attention on the sublime beauty of the moon itself, making it the undeniable centerpiece of this work."Mondaufgang" not only showcases Stifter’s artistic skill but also reflects his deep appreciation for the natural world, a theme recurrent in both his literary and visual works.

Adalbert Stifter (1805–1868) was an Austrian writer, poet, painter and pedagogue. Born in Oberplan, Bohemia (now Horní Planá, Czech Republic), he was the eldest son of a wealthy linen weaver. Better known as a writer, Stifter was able to convey vivid and engaging landscapes in both his writing and painting. At the end of his life, exhausted by physical and mental illnesses, the artist died of suicide.
