More about this artwork

Dive into the enigmatic world of Odilon Redon with the compelling lithograph titled "Cellule Auriculaire" (Auricular Cell), crafted in 1894. This artwork captures the essence of Redon's exploration into the depths of the human psyche and emotion through a unique and introspective representation. The image prominently features a face, emerging as if from the shadows, framed by a dark, circular background that suggests a confined, cell-like space. The face itself is rendered with fine, intricate lines that convey a haunting and somewhat melancholic expression, drawing the viewer into a seemingly private world of thought and reflection.Redon's artwork is renowned for its ability to blend the boundaries between reality and imagination, and "Cellule Auriculaire" is a quintessential example of this. The confined and circular framing of the face may symbolize the inner sanctum of the mind, or perhaps the metaphorical 'cell' of our own auricular perception – how we hear and internalize the world around us.This piece is a brilliant representation of Redon's symbolist approach, inviting interpretations that delve into themes of introspection, isolation, and the mysterious recesses of the human condition. As viewers, we are compelled to ponder what thoughts linger behind those deeply set eyes, ensnared within the confines of their own auricular cell."Cellule Auriculaire" stands as a testament to Redon's mastery in using dark, dream-like imagery to evoke a profound emotional and psychological response. It remains a captivating invitation to explore the unspoken and shadowed corridors of the human soul. Visit our collection to experience this mesmerizing piece and many others by Odilon Redon.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
