More about this artwork

"Flore Sous Marine," a captivating piece by the illustrious French artist Odilon Redon, transports viewers into an ethereal underwater dreamscape. This painting is a testament to Redon's trademark fusion of the real and the imaginary, typical of his later works in the Symbolist movement. In "Flore Sous Marine," Redon assembles a mesmerizing collection of shapes and forms that suggest the lush diversity of oceanic flora and fauna. The canvas is alive with vivid colors and textures; bright blue petals paired with a fiery yellow center mimic the appearance of a mysterious underwater flower, while nearby, sinuous organic forms and delicate veils of color hint at unseen marine inhabitants. At the center, a spectral, flesh-toned form looms, perhaps a coral or sponge, its anatomy a delicate mystery itself. Each element in this painting is rendered with a softness that seems both otherworldly and intimate, inviting the viewer to delve into the depths of both the ocean and their own subconscious. Redon's use of pastel, with its subtle blends and soft edges, enhances the sense of being submerged in a serene, yet vibrant underwater world."Flore Sous Marine" is a celebration of natural mystery and artistic imagination, a visual poem to the unseen wonders of the sea, rendered with the unique sensitivity and vision that defines Redon's work.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
