More about this artwork

In the intriguing lithograph "Couverture – Frontispice," created in 1890, French artist Odilon Redon presents a compelling and enigmatic image that invites viewers into a world that straddles the seen and the unseen, the conscious and the subconscious. Known for his unique blend of Symbolism and early Surrealism, Redon's artwork often explores themes of fantasy, dreams, and the inner recesses of the human mind. This particular piece features a dark, hollow rectangular area that resembles a stage curtain or a mysterious doorway, from which a spectral face emerges, partially veiled yet peering out towards the viewer. This ghostly visage is surrounded by an array of natural and mystical elements, including flowers and possibly celestial bodies or decorative motifs stylishly placed in the upper left background, suggesting a cosmic or ethereal realm behind the aperture. The stark contrasts of black and white enhance the visual and thematic tension between light and darkness in Redon’s work, highlighting the dramatic and somewhat gothic tone of the piece. The central figure's enigmatic expression also adds to the artwork’s mystique, offering no clear narrative but rather a glimpse into a transcendental and introspective voyage."Couverture – Frontispice" captivates with its beauty and complexity, serving as a testament to Redon’s mastery in portraying the ineffable and unseen forces that stir within the human psyche.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
