More about this artwork

We invite you to experience the serene beauty of Jozef Israëls' watercolor masterpiece, "Kinderen spelend aan het strand" (Children Playing at the Beach), painted between 1834 and 1911. This exquisite work captures a moment of childhood delight along the shorelines, showcasing Israëls' mastery in depicting everyday life and his profound sensitivity towards light and color. In this painting, Israëls brings to life the simple joys of childhood with two figures engaged in playful activity on a sandy beach. The scene unfolds under an expansive sky, with the vast, calm horizon stretching in the background, evoking a sense of peace and endless possibilities. On the left, a young girl dressed in a white and blue outfit sits gracefully, her attention focused on a plaything she manipulates with both hands. Beside her, a companion in a red outfit leans forward enthusiastically, perhaps giving advice or just chatting about their playful endeavor. Their interaction embodies the innocence and concentration of youth, entirely absorbed in the moment.Israëls’ technique with watercolor enhances the ethereal atmosphere, using diluted hues and soft strokes to convey not just the visual beauty but also the transient, fleeting moments of youth. Each brushstroke combines to offer a glimpse into a day at the beach, filled with light, air, and the timeless play of children against the backdrop of nature’s vast canvas."Kinderen spelend aan het strand" is a testament to Jozef Israëls’ ability to touch the heart through his art. It reminds us of the purity of childhood and the universal joy found in the simplest activities.

Jozef Israëls was a Dutch painter. He was a leading member of the group of landscape painters referred to as the Hague School and, during his lifetime, "the most respected Dutch artist of the second half of the nineteenth century".

He was born in Groningen, of Jewish parents. His father, Hartog Abraham Israëls, intended for him to be a businessman, and it was only after a determined struggle that he was allowed to embark on an artistic career. He studied initially from 1835 to 1842 at the Minerva Academy in his home town Groningen.
