More about this artwork

Experience the serene beauty of rural life through the evocative artwork of Wouterus Verschuur in "Twee paarden staand voor een stal" (Two Horses Standing in Front of a Stable). Dating back to the 19th century, this watercolor painting echoes the tranquility and timeless grace of the countryside.Verschuur, known for his masterful depictions of horses, captures the essence of these majestic creatures with meticulous detail and soft, harmonious colors. The scene is set against a rustic stable, illustrating a pair of horses harnessed and standing ready, seemingly paused in a moment of calm before commencing their day’s labor. The thatched roof of the stable and the wooden support beams frame the horses, enhancing the naturalistic setting of the artwork.Adding to the delicate composition, Verschuur includes subtle yet lively elements such as a pair of birds pecking at the ground, which infuse the scene with life and movement. The masterful use of light and shadow breathes depth into the painting, inviting viewers to step into a day in the life of the 19th-century countryside.

Wouterus Verschuur was a Dutch painter of animal subjects – mainly horses – and of landscapes. He is one of the later representatives of Romanticism in Dutch art.

Born to an Amsterdam jeweller, Verschuur received his training from the landscape and cattle painters Pieter Gerardus van Os and Cornelis Steffelaar. As part of this education Verschuur had to copy works by the 17th century painter Philips Wouwerman, like Wouwerman Verschuur’s subjects consist mostly of stable scenes, landscapes with horses and coastal landscapes.
