More about this artwork

Welcome to an intriguing glimpse into the mystical world of Odilon Redon, a master of Symbolist art, whose works delve into the realm of dreams and the subconscious. Among his captivating creations is "The Chimera Gazed at All Things with Fear," a striking lithograph that embodies the essence of Redon's unique artistic vision. In this evocative piece, we encounter a creature that is at once both eerie and enigmatic. The chimera, an entity often depicted in mythology as a fusion of multiple animals, is interpreted here with a human-like face that bespeaks an uncanny intelligence and emotional depth. Its eyes, wide and fear-stricken, draw us into its world, reflecting a profound sense of apprehension and awe.The artwork is predominantly executed in a monochromatic palette, which enhances its dream-like quality. The use of light and shadow in the lithograph creates a swirling, atmospheric effect around the chimera, suggesting a turbulent, perhaps hostile, environment. This visual technique wonderfully captures the chimera’s state of heightened alertness and vulnerability."The Chimera Gazed at All Things with Fear" is not just a representation of fear, but also a profound commentary on the human condition, confronting the unknown and the subconscious forces within us. It invites viewers to ponder their own fears and the fantastical beasts they may face.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
