More about this artwork

Welcome to our virtual gallery, featuring Edouard Manet's captivating still life, "Basket of Fruit" (circa 1864). This painting portrays a simple yet compelling composition that is rich in texture and color, embodying Manet's unique approach to still life during the mid-19th century. The scene is centered around a rustic basket filled with a lush arrangement of fruit, primarily peaches and grapes, nestled among broad, dark green leaves. The fruits are painted with a sumptuous palette that ranges from soft yellows to deep purples, capturing the play of light and shadow and exhibiting Manet’s deft brushwork. The fruit appears tangible, with each brushstroke suggesting the velvety texture of the peach skins and the plumpness of the grapes.Shadowy in background, the painting emphasizes the vivid colors and forms of the fruits, making them appear even more vibrant. At the forefront, a solitary knife rests on the surface, its blade catching the light, adding a hint of daily life's narrative to the still life.Manet, often associated with the birth of modern painting, showcases his ability to transform a traditional subject into a display of artistic expression that goes beyond mere representation. "Basket of Fruit" not only highlights his skill in depicting naturalistic details but also invites viewers to ponder the simplicity and beauty of everyday items. This painting is a beautiful example of Manet’s work and a testament to his influence on the Impressionist movement.

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was a French modernist painter and one of the first 19th century artists to paint modern life. His impressionist style is characterized by relatively small and thin brushstrokes that create emphasis on light depiction. Manet was one of the key artists in the transition from realism to impressionism, along with Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. However, he resisted involvement in any one specific style of painting, and only presented his work to the Salon of Paris instead of impressionist exhibitions. His early masterworks, The Luncheon on the Grass and Olympia, created great controversy and served as a rallying point for other young painters.
