More about this artwork

Immerse yourself in the enigmatic world of Odilon Redon, a pioneering figure of the Symbolist movement, as we explore one of his lesser-known yet captivating works, *La jeune songeuse* (circa 1870-1875). This intriguing artwork invites viewers to delve into a realm of introspective contemplation and nuanced expression.*La jeune songeuse*, or "The Young Dreamer," is a compelling demonstration of Redon's early exploration into human emotion and form. The piece, rendered predominantly in soft charcoal, features a young woman seated amidst a loosely defined, dream-like landscape. Her gaze, directed away from the viewer, coupled with her slightly open mouth, suggests a moment caught between thought and expression. The natural setting and the gentle way in which the figure merges with her surroundings indicate a symbiosis between human emotion and the natural world, a recurrent theme in Redon's work. Her form, emphasized by the subtle use of light and shadows, radiates a sense of vulnerability and ethereal beauty, hallmark characteristics of Redon’s oeuvre. The delicate strokes and the overall muted composition evoke a quietude that is both haunting and serene. This artwork not only reflects Redon's fascination with the mystical and the unseen but also showcases his mastery in using monochrome palette to evoke depth and emotion. *La jeune songeuse* stands as a testament to Redon's ability to capture the complexities of human introspection and the abstract ponderings of the soul.As you observe this profound piece, allow yourself to be drawn into the young woman's world, to ponder what thoughts lie behind her distant gaze.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
