More about this artwork

"Sterrenbeeld kreeft" by Henri van der Stok explores the astrological sign of Cancer, translated from Dutch as "Star Sign: Cancer." This evocative print from the early 20th century features a prominent and stylized depiction of a crab, positioned dramatically against a dark, star-studded sky. The crab, with its large, articulate claws and a detailed, shell-like body, seems to embody the celestial and protective qualities often associated with this water sign.In the artwork, the crab is not just an animal but appears as a mystical creature elevated against a backdrop of the cosmos, symbolizing the deep emotional and intuitive currents associated with Cancer. The strongly defined lines and contrasting dark and light areas enhance the symbolic imagery, creating a sense of depth and movement. This piece not only highlights van der Stok's skill in printmaking but also his ability to infuse symbolic imagery with a dynamic, almost life-like energy. Below the artwork, the word "CANCERO" grounds the piece firmly in its astrological context, reminding the viewer of the constellation and its mythological and astrological significance. This artwork is a wonderful representation of the coupling of art and astronomy, typical of van der Stok's era, where there was a fascination with blending scientific knowledge with artistic expression.
