More about this artwork

10" by Georges ValmierOn our digital gallery this week, we spotlight an intriguing piece from the early 20th century, "Collection décors et couleurs Pl.10," crafted by the talented Georges Valmier in 1930. Valmier, a notable figure in the Cubism movement, extends his exploration of abstract forms and intense colors through this compelling artwork. The painting is a study in geometric abstraction, composed of multiple panels each bearing its own distinct ensemble of shapes and hues. Valmier employs a bold palette dominated by reds, blues, and yellows, underpinned with blacks that accentuate the intensity of the colors. Each panel presents a labyrinth of forms, from spirals to angular blocks, which although abstract, suggest a rhythmic harmony reminiscent of musical motifs or the dynamic energy of urban landscapes. The leftmost panel shows a vertical arrangement, where playful swirls and loops dance next to stark linear forms. Transition to the central panel, and the composition becomes denser, with larger, overlapping geometric shapes creating a sense of depth and movement. The compact complexity here might evoke the feeling of city structures viewed from above. Lastly, the rightmost panel simplifies into elongated forms and curves, suggesting a fluid continuity from the dense central activity."Collection décors et couleurs Pl.10" is a vibrant testament to Valmier's mastery over color and form, where each panel offers a different melody in the visual symphony of abstract art.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
