More about this artwork

We are delighted to present one of Frances Hodgkins' vibrant watercolors, "Three Fisher Boys", created in 1927. This piece showcases Hodgkins' unique approach to form and color, elements that she masterfully manipulates to capture more than just the visual aspects of her subjects. In this painting, three young fishermen are depicted in what appears to be a candid moment of interaction. Each figure is uniquely characterized by distinct, expressive brushstrokes and bold, colorful accents that suggest the vitality and youthfulness of the subjects. Hodgkins' use of color is particularly notable; it veers away from realistic depiction and leans toward emotive hues that suggest the personalities and moods of the boys. The boys are dressed in work clothes typical of fishermen, topped with hats that add a touch of individuality to each figure. Their faces, sketched with swift and confident lines, convey a sense of rugged life at sea, hinting at both the hardship and camaraderie that defines their daily lives. The background remains loosely defined, swirling around the figures, which brings the viewer’s focus firmly to the expressions and interplay between the boys."Three Fisher Boys" embodies Hodgkins' talent for transforming everyday scenes into striking compositions of color and dynamism. It is a celebration not only of the artist's technical skill but also of her deep empathy for her subjects, finding beauty and color in the everyday lives of ordinary people.

Frances Mary Hodgkins (28 April 1869 – 13 May 1947) was a New Zealand painter chiefly of landscape and still life, and for a short period was a designer of textiles. She was born and raised in New Zealand, but spent most of her working life in England. She is considered one of New Zealand's most prestigious and influential painters, although it is the work from her life in Europe, rather than her home country, on which her reputation rests.
