More about this artwork

"Arrangement of Jugs" (1938) by Frances Hodgkins offers a compelling glimpse into the artist's innovative approach to still life that transcends traditional boundaries. In this vibrant and energetic composition, Hodgkins plays with a harmonious blend of abstraction and representation, creating a dynamic interaction between color, form, and line. The painting features a collection of jugs and vessels, each portrayed with a unique character. From the bold, ochre jug at the center, adorned with subtle motiffs that suggest a rich texture, to the translucent green jug on the left, every element is highlighted through Hodgkins’ masterful use of color contrasts and soft outlines. Flourishes of red and green shoots suggest life and growth, adding a lively organic touch to the inanimate subjects. Additionally, the presence of an ashtray in the foreground introduces an everyday object into the scene, grounding the ethereal composition in tangible reality.Hodgkins’ use of overlapping forms and a diverse palette that ranges from deep greens and yellows to light blues and grays, creates a sense of depth and movement, inviting the viewer to delve into the interplay of the objects and the spaces around them. This painting not only reflects Hodgkins' modernist sensibilities but also showcases her ability to evoke emotion and narrative through the simplest of setups.

Frances Mary Hodgkins (28 April 1869 – 13 May 1947) was a New Zealand painter chiefly of landscape and still life, and for a short period was a designer of textiles. She was born and raised in New Zealand, but spent most of her working life in England. She is considered one of New Zealand's most prestigious and influential painters, although it is the work from her life in Europe, rather than her home country, on which her reputation rests.
