More about this artwork

Explore the vibrant interplay of colors and forms in Frances Hodgkins' "Market at Concarneau from a window of the Hotel des Voyageurs," painted in 1927. This captivating piece offers a visceral sense of movement and vitality through its abstract depiction of a bustling market scene viewed from indoors, behind the ornate rails of a window.Hodgkins' use of fluid, dynamic brushstrokes and a rich, earthy palette captures the essence of a lively market atmosphere. The painting invites viewers to peek through a wrought-iron balcony framing, which cleverly integrates elements of the environment. It nearly blends the interior and the outer scenery into a harmonious composition.Amidst the abstract forms, one can discern the shapes of trees and possibly distant figures, interspersed with hints of architectural structures. The expressive lines and blurred contours suggest the transient, ephemeral nature of a market, constantly shifting and alive with human activity. This painting is a testament to Hodgkins' skill in conveying the feel and tempo of a place through non-traditional, expressionistic techniques. It's a feast for the eyes and a challenge to the imagination, providing endless interpretations and a deep sense of place.

Frances Mary Hodgkins (28 April 1869 – 13 May 1947) was a New Zealand painter chiefly of landscape and still life, and for a short period was a designer of textiles. She was born and raised in New Zealand, but spent most of her working life in England. She is considered one of New Zealand's most prestigious and influential painters, although it is the work from her life in Europe, rather than her home country, on which her reputation rests.
