More about this artwork

Welcome to the mesmerizing world of Frances Hodgkins, where vibrant hues and bold designs converge to form intriguing patterns. “Untitled (Textile Design No II)” is a testament to Hodgkins’ pioneering spirit in the realm of modernist design and her keen aesthetic sensibility. Created around 1925, this artwork embodies the era's shift towards abstraction and an experimental approach to art and design. This striking composition features a lively red background that serves as a vivid stage for the abstract shapes scattered across it. The repetitive motifs of black silhouetted forms are reminiscent of stylized hats or perhaps abstract architectural elements, each casting its own unique presence on the canvas. These primary shapes are accompanied by angular pieces in muted gray and vibrant yellow rods, suggesting motion or interaction among the elements.Hodgkins’ use of color and form in this piece not only challenges traditional perceptions of textile patterns but also demonstrates her ability to manipulate visual elements for maximum impact. Each component in this painting is deliberately placed to maintain a dynamic balance, creating a sense of rhythm and energy that reflects the innovative spirit of the 1920s.“Untitled (Textile Design No II)” offers a glimpse into Frances Hodgkins’ exploratory approach to textile design, standing as a bold expression of her artistic vision.

Frances Mary Hodgkins (28 April 1869 – 13 May 1947) was a New Zealand painter chiefly of landscape and still life, and for a short period was a designer of textiles. She was born and raised in New Zealand, but spent most of her working life in England. She is considered one of New Zealand's most prestigious and influential painters, although it is the work from her life in Europe, rather than her home country, on which her reputation rests.
