More about this artwork

Untitled [Mother and Child] by Frances Hodgkins, painted circa 1924, is a compelling expression of the timeless bond between a mother and her child. This painting is rendered in a modernist style characterized by fluid, expressive lines and a striking use of color that Hodgkins is renowned for.At the heart of the composition, the figures of the mother and child are intertwined, suggesting a moment of deep connection and tenderness. The mother, depicted in a reclining pose, envelops the child with her arms, providing a protective and nurturing embrace. The child, shown in a bold, blue contour, clings to the mother, emphasizing their mutual affection and dependency.Hodgkins’ use of bold, earthy tones alongside visceral reds and stark blues adds a dynamic and emotional depth to the painting, reflecting the warmth and complexity of maternal love. The loose, almost abstract, brushwork invites viewers to engage with the painting on a visceral level, allowing for a personal interpretation of this intimate interaction.Untitled [Mother and Child] is not just a depiction of maternal affection but also an embodiment of Hodgkin's innovative approach to form and color, making it a profound piece for contemplation in our collection.

Frances Mary Hodgkins (28 April 1869 – 13 May 1947) was a New Zealand painter chiefly of landscape and still life, and for a short period was a designer of textiles. She was born and raised in New Zealand, but spent most of her working life in England. She is considered one of New Zealand's most prestigious and influential painters, although it is the work from her life in Europe, rather than her home country, on which her reputation rests.
